Sweeney Todd - one of Burton’s best
Perhaps I’m being overly generous after the musical waterboarding that was Wicked, but I was very impressed with the macabre showtunes of Tim Burton’s Sweeney Todd, which were far more complex and enjoyable than the paint-by-numbers populist garbage of most modern musicals. The subject matter was a perfect, grisly pairing with Burton’s usual thematic style, and the sets and cinematography were as amazing as you might expect from Burton. Johhny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter are excellent, as always, especially given that these are their first singing performances ever. The supporting cast shines as well and were all excellent choices. One of my favorite Burton films to date, despite the extraordinary gruesomeness. 4.5/5.0
