Indiana Jones - my face is melting!
So, Amy, Gill, and I needed to kill some time after the Dave Attell show ended at 9 PM.  (WTF?)  We head to the movies and have to choose what we hope is the lesser of two suckfests: Indiana Jones and Narnia.  I’m pretty sure that we chose wrong — Indiana Jones was far worse than I could have possibly imagined.  Aliens?  Shia?  Fuck you, George Lucas and your shitty writing!

Arizona = Cleveland
Amy and I arrived in Arizona last night to visit my mom.  Looks like the Cleveland weather followed us: cold and rainy.  Never in my previous visits to Arizona have I see weather like this.  All I packed were t-shirts and shorts!

Iron Man - a worthy start to the summer
Probably my favorite so far of the superhero genre.  I think that I like that the superpowers are the result of technology, rather than genetic mutation.  Seems more believable and less comic-booky (says the guy who collected comics for years as a kid).  But I think that what I really liked was Robert Downey Jr. — he was already one of my favorite actors, but he is absolutely perfect in this...

Sweeney Todd - one of Burton's best
Perhaps I’m being overly generous after the musical waterboarding that was Wicked, but I was very impressed with the macabre showtunes of Tim Burton’s Sweeney Todd, which were far more complex and enjoyable than the paint-by-numbers populist garbage of most modern musicals.  The subject matter was a perfect, grisly pairing with Burton’s usual thematic style, and the sets and...

What is up with the shitty Hyundai commercials featuring obscure economists who no one gives two shits about?  (And that is coming from an economics major.) Is this some sort of post-modernist twist on car advertising?  An appeal to the intelligentsia of auto consumers?  Or just a lame-ass piece-of-shit idea?

Hip newscasters
What is up with certain newscasters insisting on pronouncing Missouri “Missourah?”  Is this some sort of authenticity play?  Are they keeping it realer than the other newscasters?

The Syracuse gig
Extremely weak.  A total clusterfuck of a night.  I literally played three songs before the party got shut down.  The DJ schedule was running at least 1 hour behind.  I wasn’t the only one who got screwed — lots of other DJs only got to play for about 15 minutes.  What really made it annoying was the one DJ who did get to play for a full hour (maybe longer) was awful — absolutely...

Off to beautiful Rochester...
Heading to the airport now…Amy and I are hitting Rochester tonight to check out a Gabriel & Dresden party (we’d better be on the guestlist, damnit), then driving to Syracuse tomorrow where I’ll be getting dragged out of DJ retirement to play a set at some ungodly hour.  (Well, a few years ago, it was a very godly hour, but I’m a geezer now.)  Hopefully I don’t...

Happy 4/20, everyone!
I spent my day getting mad blazed off the phat blunts! Actually, I spent all weekend raking my lawn.  I believe that “dethatching” is what they call it. But on a positive note, I have tons of new material for my forthcoming blog, “Stuff I Found In My Lawn!”

First day out on the basketball courts
This may be my last summer of hooping.  My body is completely useless.  I can barely jump without making my back hurt.  I’m way too young to be this much of a cripple.  Time to learn yoga.

Crazy weekend
Haven’t posted in a while due to wedding festivities for the past couple of days.  First a pre-party on Friday night, then the wedding and after-party last night.  It has been a looong time since I’ve gotten so trashed two nights in a row.  Though my brain and body are paying for it now, it was all worth it to be reunited with so many old friends.  It was just like old times.

Another life-purchase down...
Finally bought us a proper camcorder.  We had an old-school tape-based one, but I am far too digital to deal with such antiquated technology.  Although I didn’t buy an HD camcorder, so I guess I am still somewhat antiquated.  HD cost way too much and, considering I don’t even have an HDTV, didn’t seem to make much sense.  Plus, I’m not planning to direct any music videos...

The Assassination of Jesse James - worth the three...
Not for people with short attention spans, but well worth the evening for a unique, interesting story and fascinating view into an era long gone. Overall, a beautifully shot movie laden with superb performances throughout, though the cameo by James Carville nearly snapped me completely out of the fantasy. Perhaps one of the earliest examples in America of celebrity trumping morality and how fame,...

Move on, McCain
From MoveOn.org: 10 things you should know about John McCain (but probably don’t): 1. John McCain voted against establishing a national holiday in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Now he says his position has “evolved,” yet he’s continued to oppose key civil rights laws. 2. According to Bloomberg News, McCain is more hawkish than Bush on Iraq, Russia and China....

Hey kids! Don't copy that floppy! Word.
Props to AGSystems for tracking down this classic gem.  What’s crazy is that I’m pretty sure that I was forced to watch this as a kid.  And just like a real ’80s rap song, it’s got 100 verses.

My Kid Could Paint That - worth seeing
Though this documentary lacks polish — particularly when the documentarian turns the camera on himself — it’s still an intriguing examination of how humans can so quickly turn on something that seems too good to be true.  In this case that something is 4-year-old Marla, who paints stunning, abstract canvases that are several leagues ahead of the visual babble that almost any kid...

Wicked: Worst Musical Ever?
Banal, mainstream fluff for the crowd that enjoys musical adaptations of Legally Blond and Disney movies. A great concept completely ruined by music composed for the lowest common denominator. Simply singing your dialogue does not make it a “song” — and such lame, corny dialogue at that. Utterly agonizing to sit through. Somehow, it managed to knock Phantom off the top of my...
